The Origins OF “VACATION”

“Many people naturally assume the word vacation originated in the United States, where it became deeply woven into modern travel culture. In reality, its story began centuries earlier. Derived from the Latin word vacare, meaning ‘to be free from duty’ or ‘to be unoccupied’, the term gradually found its place within medieval academic life at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, where students were granted periods of ‘vacation’—time away from lectures devoted to rest, reflection and personal study. As the English language evolved and later crossed the Atlantic, the meaning expanded beyond the walls of academia to represent leisure, exploration and the freedom to experience the world beyond everyday responsibilities.

Long before commercial tourism emerged, artists were already capturing the timeless pleasures of travel and escape. From elegant seaside promenades and tranquil beaches to refined garden gatherings and leisurely outdoor dining, masterpieces by Claude Monet, Georges Seurat, Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, Joaquín Sorolla, Jean-François de Troy and other celebrated painters remind us that the desire to pause, discover and appreciate beauty has always been part of the human experience. These scenes were not simply holidays—they reflected a way of life built around curiosity, culture and meaningful moments.
